When Jesus Speaks Your Name
You are Known, Seen, and Restored
“When Jesus rose early on the first day of the week, He appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom He had driven seven demons…” Mark 16:9–11
If we let them, the voices of others and the reverberations of our own past can ring in our minds like a clanging bell. That noise can drown out the truth of who we are and reinforce the enemy’s work to steal our peace. Like Mary, we can become tormented by lies that distort our identity.
But Jesus calls us into His marvelous light.
Mary’s story didn’t begin in darkness, but for a long time, that’s all everyone saw. People whispered when she passed. Her suffering became her reputation. Her name was swallowed by her affliction.
But Jesus saw her.
Not the chaos. Not the fear. Not the labels others had placed on her. He saw the person God had imagined from the beginning.
When He spoke her name, it wasn’t with pity; it was with authority and tenderness woven together.
“Mary.”
At the sound of His voice, darkness trembled. The torment fled and her mind cleared. For the first time in years, she stood straight. She felt like herself again.
But Jesus didn’t stop at freeing her mind. No. He had so much more in store. He renewed her identity.
No longer Mary the possessed.
No longer Mary the broken.
No longer defined by the worst chapter of her life.
He called her beloved.
He called her whole.
He called her His.
And Mary believed Him.
She followed Him with the confidence of someone who had been seen, known, and restored. She stood at the cross when others fled. And on resurrection morning, she was the first to hear Him speak her name again, this time from the other side of death.
“Mary.”
The Voice that restored her now spoke restoration over the world. She ran to tell the others, not as who she had been, but as who Jesus had named her:
A witness.
A disciple.
A daughter of God.
A bearer of good news.
And that identity could not be taken from her.
That same restoring Voice called my name.
“Cathy.”
Yesterday, I completed a project the Lord had assigned to me several years ago. When I finally hit “send,” my heart began to race and tears stung my eyes. It felt like the kind of moment where obedience meets relief.
But almost immediately, a faint whisper crept in, “This will fail. You’re not qualified. You shouldn’t have done it.”
It was subtle, but sharp. It was a kind of lie designed to unravel confidence and choke out joy.
For a moment, I felt the weight of it pressing in…
Instinctively, I replaced that lie with the truth God has spoken over me. Truth about who He is. Truth about who I am in Him. Truth that doesn’t tremble in the presence of accusation.
Then I heard it again.
“Cathy”
And in that moment, I remembered Mary.
I remembered how she, too, had been tormented by lies. Lies that tried to define her, diminish her, and convince her she was unworthy. But when Jesus spoke her name, every lie lost its grip. Her identity was restored. Her purpose awakened. Her story was rewritten by the One who sees beyond the shadows.
And I realized something powerful. The same Jesus who called Mary into freedom is the One who calls me — and all of us — into the truth of who we are.
The enemy whispers to intimidate.
Jesus speaks to restore.
And His voice always wins!
Like Mary, you may have been known only by your pain. People may have whispered, avoided, or defined you by a single moment. But Jesus sees more.
He speaks your name with compassion and authority, and the things that once held you lose their grip. You stand not as the afflicted, but as the restored.
Jesus doesn’t just free you from what broke you. No dear heart, He renames your future.
Mary’s story is a living picture of what Jesus does for all of us:
“He has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.” 1 Peter 2:9
We are chosen.
We are His.
We are brought into a light that transforms everything it touches.
No darkness is too deep.
No label is too heavy.
No story is too far gone.
When Jesus calls your name, He calls you into freedom, purpose, and identity.
Loving Father, thank You for seeing us fully; beyond our wounds, our history, and the names others have spoken over us. Thank You for calling us out of darkness and into Your marvelous light, just as You called Mary into freedom and wholeness.
Speak our names again, Lord. Let Your voice silence every lie and every shadow. Restore what has been broken. Heal what has been hurting. Remind us that we are defined not by what tried to destroy us, but by the truth You declare over us. Help us walk boldly in the identity You have given us, so our lives become testimonies of Your compassion and redeeming love.
Dear heart, you are not what tried to destroy you. You are not what others call you. You are not defined by the lie that whispers you are not enough. You are who Jesus says you are.
Thank you for joining me in this corner of the internet where our identity is found in Jesus. I may not know your given name so I will greet you as He describes you, “Hello Chosen.” Pull up a chair and rest in the presence of the One who calls you Beloved, Forgiven, Redeemed, and Cherished.
What’s your name? Go ahead, say it aloud, in agreement with what He has already said.

Replace the lies with His truth. Chosen. For His purpose. Faith is believing.
