“Jesus, take the wheel.”
Surrendering the Wheel to the One Who Sees the Whole Road
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.” Proverbs 3:5 (NIV)
I was talking with a friend recently about a weighty decision she needed to make. We walked through the pros and cons, talked through the possibilities, and tried to make sense of the unknown. After a long pause, she finally threw her hands up in surrender and said, “Jesus, take the wheel.”
She meant it. She’s a woman of deep faith. But as I walked away from that conversation, a question lingered in my heart: Did she really let Jesus take the wheel or did she simply acknowledge that she should?
And then came the harder question: Do I?
We often say the words, but our hands stay tightly wrapped around the steering wheel of our lives. We want God’s help, but we also want control. We want His peace, but we want our plan. We want His guidance, but we want the route we already mapped out.
Proverbs 3:5 invites us into something deeper. It calls us to trust God with all our heart; not the parts we’re comfortable releasing, not the areas we’ve already figured out, but the whole of who we are. Trust that loosens our grip. Trust that releases our illusion of control. Trust that says, “Lord, I don’t just want You to fix this moment. I want You to lead my life.”
Letting Jesus “take the wheel” doesn’t mean we stop thinking, planning, or acting. Biblical trust is participatory.
It means we steer with obedience while God sets the direction.
We act with faith while God provides the wisdom.
We move forward, but we follow His lead.
True surrender is not about abandoning the wheel. Get ready for the truth bomb: True surrender is abandoning self‑reliance. Ouch!
Sometimes the hardest part of faith isn’t trusting God, it is admitting how much we’ve been trusting ourselves. Letting go then is wisdom. It’s the moment we stop pretending we can carry what only God can hold.
Faith is letting go of control.
Trust is holding on to God.
When we loosen our grip, we discover something surprising: God doesn’t just take the wheel in emergencies. He leads us daily, quietly, faithfully, and patiently. He guides us through foggy stretches, redirects us when we drift, and steadies us when the road feels unstable.
And when we finally release the wheel, we find that His hands were steady long before ours ever were.
I want to leave you with a few Scriptures to remind you to loosen your grip and trust His way:
“Commit your way to the Lord; trust in Him and He will act.” Psalm 37:5
“My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is made perfect in weakness.” 2 Corinthians 12:9
“Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.” Psalm 119:105
So, go ahead. Surrender the wheel to the One Who sees the whole road.
Loving Father, I confess that I often say I trust You while still trying to control everything around me. Teach me to loosen my grip. Teach me to surrender; not just in crisis, but in the quiet, ordinary moments of my life. Lead me in Your wisdom. Guide my steps. Calm my fears. I choose to trust You with the wheel, the road, and the destination.
Dear heart, letting go is never easy. Your hands have been gripping the wheel for so long that surrender can feel like losing control. But trust grows in the quiet places where you loosen your grip and let Jesus lead. He is not asking you to navigate the unknown alone. He is inviting you to rest while He guides you, to breathe while He directs, and to trust while He steadies the road beneath you. When fear rises and your instinct is to take back control, pause and remember: His hands are stronger, His vision is clearer, and His love is unwavering. Release what you cannot carry and hold fast to the One who carries you.
Thank you for joining me in this corner of the internet where we surrender control to the One Who guides our steps. Pull out a chair and stay awhile. He might just reveal His good plans for you as you linger in His presence.
Where have you been saying, “Jesus, take the wheel,” but what you really mean is:
“Jesus, sit in the passenger seat while I keep driving.”
“Jesus, advise me, but don’t change my plans.”
“Jesus, help me avoid consequences, but don’t ask me to surrender control.”

Thank you, Cathy! I needed to read these words today.
Love this !!! asking him to take the wheel while we still sitting in the driver seat and got him on the passenger side that’s deep🙏🏾🙏🏾
